Water Sports and Wet Adventures in New Zealand
There are plenty of ways to get wet in New Zealand with ample opportunity to enjoy numerous water activities and relaxation. Local tourism operators can provide you with all the safety equipment for water sports and tuition is generally available for beginners. Local Geo-Thermal Oasis (Natural Hot Spring) can make you forget the real world.
A great thing about being on the Pacific Ring of Fire is that there are natural hot springs in New Zealand we can enjoy. The geothermal activity is not so far under our feet in some areas, like Rotorua, where the Earth’s crust gets thinner heating up water near the surface. It is when these hot streams reach cold rivers that the water gets to a nice temperature to bathe in. Another way the natural hot pools are made is by volcanic underground reservoirs heating up water. Many of the lakes in the central North Island area are volcanic crater lakes, while the majority of the lakes near the Southern Alps were carved by glaciers.
In New Zealand there are 3,820 lakes with a surface area larger than one hectare.
Over 180,000 km of rivers have been mapped in New Zealand. The longest river is the Waikato River with a length of 425 km.
Whilst you’re on holiday and the sun is hot, there’s no better time to have fun in the water. So grab your sunscreen, hat and sunnies to enjoy the New Zealand nature safely and get out there!
