New Zealand is one of the world’s great fishing countries. Trout are plentiful throughout the country.
Fishing is popular in New Zealand with more than 15,000 km of coastline. Crystal clear rivers and lakes provide fantastic opportunities for freshwater fishing with rainbow and brown trout on both islands and sea-run salmon in the South Island. Lake Taupo is world-renowned for trout fishing.
The season last from December to June. If you’re up north you can expect to catch snapper, kingfish and tarakihi. In the far south, you’re looking at blue cod, trumpeter and grouper. Snapper is the prized fish for most sea fishermen. You can be chasing some seriously big fish including marlin, billfish, yellowfin tuna and kingfish if you head out on a charter from Russell or Tutukaka in Northland or from Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty.
Most waters in New Zealand are in the public domain. Many are easily accessed via public right of way and the Queens Chain. Others can usually be visited through landowner permission.
Please be aware of local regulations regarding seasons, catch limits, licensing laws and fishing methods. Fishing in New Zealand is administered by local Fish & Game Councils. You need a current Sports Fishing Licence for all waters. A range of licences are available and there are special licence requirements for Non Residents and anglers who want to fish designated Backcountry Fisheries.
