The Ashburton Arcade was built in the late 1800s as a livery stable and wool sale yard. A hive of activity for the central business district until the 1970s when it was left nearly abandoned apart from a few small retail outlets that traded until it was redeveloped as a major retail centre for the town in the mid 1980s.
Today it is a vibrant shopping centre with entrances from East, Burnett and Tancred Streets - full of good shopping, food, internet facilities and services.
