In 1993, Ian Newton and his partner Ros Squire bought this hillside property in the Upper Moutere area. They planted some of it in vines, devoting the remaining land to grass and trees, with a focus on natives.

The winery and cellar door are perched on top of the hill, next to the family home, with views of the valley below. Sunset Valley has been organic from the beginning – the vineyard was certified in 1997, followed by the first commercial crop in 1998.

Everything takes place on the property, from grape-growing to winemaking, storing and bottling. All the major varieties are planted, from their reserve wines Pinot noir and Chardonnay to Pinot Rose, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurtzraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling.

This is a boutique operation and Ian and Ros have gained a strong following for their friendly welcome and flavoursome wines. The growing reputation of the winery is testament to the grueling hours of hard work and dedication required to make a vineyard of this size succeed commercially.
