Many of the books and ephemera displayed are precious or rare and the changing selection of materials allows visitors the chance to experience the rich holdings of the Heritage Collections.
Materials held in the Heritage Collections span centuries and cultures, from a millennium-old fragment of Greek papyrus to modern New Zealand fiction and art works. The wonderfully diverse holdings include illuminated medieval manuscripts, Maori resources, early maps of Dunedin, rich genealogical resources, and books on publishing and printing.
Other items held include collections of works by Charles Dickens and Samuel Johnson, troopship journals, local and national government documents from the nineteenth century to present day, and material spanning the scope of New Zealand literature and history.
