Different things keep us busy here at First Church. I see being busy as a good thing. Last weekend I attended the AGM for the Synod of Otago and Southland where the Moderator of General Assembly encourage us to rephrase our ‘busyness’ to being "intentionally engaging." I like that even better. Being intentional about what we do not only gives a focus, but also purpose and motivation.
These areas are vital to our mission as a congregation we intentionally seek to engage with others in our community with the good news of Jesus Christ. At the AGM, it was also a blessing to witness the Rev John Sinclair being honoured by the Moderator of Synod for his long service of ministry within the Synod area.
Our Holy Week services were such an encouragement. It was pleasing to good numbers attend and willingly participate in our services. This spirit of sharing together culminated in some very moving experiences for many who were able to engage with the Easter story. I was very proud of our ministry intern Tengaru Paniora for preparing and leading the Maundy Thursday service so well.
On a very somber note, it was distressing to here of the passing of one of the Samoan students from Otago University. She had been attending some of our services last year and was very close to some of our Samoan young people who are also studying. Her unexpected death has had a huge impact on Pacific students and staff of the university. Please keep in prayer the family of this young student and others affected by her loss.
It would be appropriate to mention here our remembrance of Anzac Day. The Gospel reading for this Sunday includes Jesus’
declaration of himself as the good shepherd who "lays down his life for the sheep." Anzac Day is always a time when we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice so long ago. We are privileged to have Rev Dr Tony Martin, a former chaplain in the British Army, to address us with what I’m sure will be a stimulating message.
We have a Sculpture Exhibition in our church grounds by the Otago Sculpture Trust. Previous exhibitions were in 1979 and 1984. We welcomed the representatives of the Trust and artists on Friday and are grateful for the eight pieces exhibited as part of the 100 year Commemoration of World War One. Please take the opportunity to appreciate them.
Lastly, I would like to introduce you to the latest member of our family. On Thursday 16th April, our grandson Mastell-Ben Tetaria Mervin Joseph-Matapo arrived weighing in at 10lbs. We are so proud and pleased of his parents Manu and Angel for such a handsome and healthy brother for Ananiah and Jahziel.
