Stafford Gables Hostel was built in 1907 as a private hospital. It had wards for 18 patients, up-to-date operating and antiseptic rooms and a service lift. It was run as Stafford Hospital for 50 years before becoming a hotel. It is a beautiful heritage Victorian building and has been a Prominent Youth Hostel since 1981. It has welcomed travellers from all over the world young and old since then. All are welcome.

Built by prominent architect Basil Hooper it has many features typical of his buildings; a gabled roof of Marseilles tiles, paired veranda posts, well-proportioned windows, coloured glass and decorative timber brackets. Basil Hooper designed many private houses in Dunedin. He was also responsible for supervising the building of St Paul's Cathedral in the Octagon. Walk up Stafford Street or High Street and you will see other Basil Hooper houses.

The south wing (right side of the building) was added in 1917. It was also designed by Basil Hooper and blends in with the rest of the building exceptionally well – so much so you would not realise it was a later addition unless that fact was pointed out to you!

Today we have beds for 67 hosteliers, 2 flats, 61 different rooms, 5 staircases, 4 levels. 105 doors, 11 toilets, 3 balconies, 1 very long veranda and a scenic roof garden. Looking at the building from the back garden will give you a better idea of its size. It is so amazing!
