Meniscus Wine Lounge

Location: New Zealand / South Island / Akaroa

Enjoy the taste of Akaroa at the Meniscus Wine Lounge, located in the historic 1860's cottage at 42 Rue Lavaud in the original French section of Akaroa. The wine is grown on the hillside off Lighthouse Rd on the south side of Akaroa overlooking the township. Meniscus vineyard is readily visible from the town as well as the Main and French Bay wharves. The grape varieties grown are Riesling, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. You can taste the various vintages, enjoy a glass, share a bottle or carafe with friends in the Lounge or in the delightful French cottage garden.
Currently open: Saturday afternoons & Wednesday afternoons - 2.30pm until 7pm approx.

The vineyard is managed by Renan Cataliotti. Renan has studied in France completing his viticulture and oenology studies in 2006 and then worked in several different vineyards in France including the Cave cooperative of Saint Christol, the Domaine Sigalou and Aumerade.
On touring the world he visited New Zealand, discovered Akaroa and fell in love with not only Akaroa but also his now wife, Joey, whose family are long time residents of Akaroa.

The Meniscus collection begins in 2009 with wines that reflect those of the Alsace region of France but with a distinctive Akaroan flavour due to the unique soil of the ancient crater rim and climate of the Bank’s Peninsula. Riesling, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris are available.
2011 is the next vintage again with Riesling and Pinot Noir being produced.
2012 was an awkward year with difficult climate variations and three wines have been produced Riesling, Bouriaud Pinot and Pinot Gris. The Bourioud Pinot is a rose' style suitable for all occasions.
The Bouriaud Pinot is named after Elie Bouriaud who was one of the first French settlers who arrived in July 1840 as his father was a wine grower in Rochforte, France. The 2013 Riesling has a delightful
taste and is likely to become a wine connoisseur's collector item.
